Heart of the Art: The Stone Rolled Away

The Inspiration

One of the most important images of the Easter story is the empty tomb. In the Gospels, the fist four books of the New Testament, we read of how Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus took Jesus’ body from the cross, wrapped him in linens and perfumes, and brought him to a tomb to be buried. For everyone at that time, it seemed that was the end of it, and the work he did on earth failed to prove the things he spoke would come to pass. Fortunately, that wasn’t the end of the story after all. We read that some of his followers came to visit the tomb, only to find the stone that sealed it rolled aside, the linens laying inside on the ground, and no body present. Jesus rose from the dead, just as he said he would. The sacrifice he made was purposed to set his people, including you and me, free from the bondage of our sins, our past mistakes and current struggles. He defeated death itself to reign in glory so that we could come to know him as our savior, and in that know God as our Father and friend. The end of the story has yet to happen, because he lives.

The Breakdown

This edit was done 80% in Matter; An organic element was used as the rock portion, and two of the simple disc elements made up the tomb entrance. After adding a small border in Tangent, it was color graded in Mextures.
